EarthScope's San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) - funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and conducted in full partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) - broke ground on June 11, 2004 in Parkfield, California. Drilling will continue through early October.
