Message of the Day

06/30/2004Today the Nabors crew finished installing the Blow Out Preventer stack which will be tested using pressure valves before drilling resumes.

06/29/2004After a surface inspection of the cured cement, the crew began installing the blow out preventer and flow line for the next stage of drilling.
06/28/2004Today the science team and contractors met to discuss methods for sampling fluids from the well to measure gas and fluid geochemistry at depth. Casing and cementing of the SAFOD well to 1978 ft was completed today.
06/27/2004SAFOD drilling project made progress today towards casing the well from 200 ft to 1994 ft.
06/26/2004SAFOD well steadily approaching towards the granitic basement. Mudlogger Sean Mitchel analyzing the transition from sedimentary to granitic rock.
06/25/2004Today SAFOD well made progress down to 1867 ft depth where a survey showed the well is near vertical. Currently we are passing through a clay-rich zone and steadily approaching the 2000 foot casing point.
06/24/2004After installing the fifth 26 inch bit late last night, we are making headway through the interbedded sands and clays at a depth of 1675 ft.
06/23/2004At a depth of 1561 ft the drill bit once again bites the dust. The night crew is currently tripping out of the hole to investigate.
06/22/2004We are currently at a depth of 1410 ft and are advancing through a section of unconsolidated sands at a rate of approximately 15 ft/hr with the new bit that was attached last night.
06/21/2004The crew have once again noticed that the drill string is under a lot of torque and are tripping out to investigate the condition of the bit.
06/20/2004The 26" bit has been replaced and consequently the rate of penetration has increased from about 5 ft/hr to 22 ft/hr.
06/19/2004The 26" bit has been replaced and consequently the rate of penetration has increased from about 5 ft/hr to 22 ft/hr.
06/18/2004The worn 26 inch bit, used to advance the SAFOD borehole from 200 to 840 ft in sedimentary rock, was replaced today with a new bit.
06/17/2004With a brand new top-drive in place we are once again turning to the right and making good progress with a current depth of 765 ft.
06/16/2004Repairs on the rig continue today and we anticipate drilling to resume before the night is through.
06/15/2004The drilling crew works around the clock to replace the top-drive as temperatures soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
06/14/2004The Duke Univ. seismic crew arrived today to finish installing an array of geophones that will record the vibration of the bit during drilling. As the borehole reaches a depth of 500' drilling is expected to continue at a steady pace through the night.
06/13/2004Today the SAFOD borehole was advanced by 100 feet. The system used to monitor drilling was calibrated this morning and all drilling-related data is now available in real-time both on-site and via the world wide web.
06/12/2004The first 200' of the SAFOD borehole were drilled successfully and we are now waiting for the cement around the casing to set before drilling will continue with a 26" bit.
06/11/2004The SAFOD borehole is spud at 6:30am on June 11, 2004. We are now turning to the right with a 36" bit on our way to penetrating the San Andreas Fault.
06/10/2004Final preparations were made today. At nearly midnight SAFOD is about to become a reality !
06/09/2004As the start of drilling nears, scientists were busy today installing equipment for gas analysis and seismic data acquisition.
06/08/2004The primary task onsite today was to rig up the top drive. Everyone enjoyed an unusually beautiful, cool day here in Parkfield.
06/07/2004The rig is nearing completion as we approach the start of drilling. Additional crew are arriving on site, and scientists are getting ready for the data to start flowing (pun intended!).
06/06/2004Cranes and pulleys were very busy at the SAFOD site today as the derrick and rig floor were raised into place. Now various pieces of equipment are being lifted onto the rig, and final adjustments are being made to the site in preparation for drilling.
